Kilim is a Turkish Word which means a type of carpet that is flat woven (by hand) – unlike the pile effect from a handknotted rug.

Kilims are traditionally used in the summer months on the floors of homes although some westerners prefer to hang them as wall hangings. The Kilims have a variety of functions, they can be made into cushion covers, sofa throws, bags, purses the uses are endless.

Kilims have a history of being used more in the village way of life opposed to the city dwellers. Village people find it easier to keep the Kilim clean then a piled rug

Village home made Kilims are always made from wool – but on occasion they can be made from a cotton base and woven wool. On rare ocassions Kilims can be made from 100 % pure silk. Very beautiful to the naked eye.

The tighter and closer the weave per sq cm means the Kilim is of superior quality. Old Kilims are made with natural dyes to cast the colours opposed to dyes done the chemical modern way.

Each region of Turkey has its own unique design, motif and colour combinations.

The Kilim rug can be found in countries neighbouring Turkey such as Iran, Turkistan, Russia, Armenia,Uyghur ,Mongolia ,China.
